Q&A
  • Why is omega-3 and fish oil healthy?

The WHO-report from 2003 concludes that it is convincing documentation that an intake of 200-500 mg EPA and DHA per. day reduces the risk of coronary heart desease.

An article by Wang et al from 2006 concludes that increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fishoil supplement, reduces heart infarct and probably the risk for stroke. Intake of linolenic acid (ALA, vegetable omega-3) don not seem to have the same effect. Mozaffarian and Rimm concludes in an review article that there is strong documentation for an inverse connection between intake of fish oil and coronary heart disease

  • I have heard that fisheries are over-exploited and many fish types are in danger of becoming extinct. Is your fish in this range?

No, all our fish oils come from sustainable sources. Denomega only source fish oil from fish that are not endangered and are either farmed or fished in very well-regulated populations.

  • How much EPA and DHA should I eat?

The recommended daily dosage of EPA and DHA varies from country to country, however, not all countries have set an RDI even though there are several thousand studies describing beneficial health effects of EPA and DHA. If you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor about the appropriate dose.

The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) recommends 500 mg EPA and DHA per day for adults to prevent heart disease.

ISSFAL has also compiled recommendations by others:

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently set labeling reference intake values of 250 mg/day EPA + DHA.

  • Can I get too much Omega-3?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows up to 2 g Omega-3 from supplements/3 g from food per day.

Otherwise, followed the recommendations on the label of the Omega-3 containing product you are using. If you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor about the appropriate dose.

  • I am allergic to fish – can I take fish oil?

Fish allergy is caused by fish protein, which is removed from the fish oil in our thorough processing. Our oils are highly refined, bleached and deodorized and many people who do not tolerate fish can take them. However, if you have experienced severe allergic reactions to fish or crustaceans, please consult with your doctor before you start eating products containing fish oil. Check local legislation for labeling requirements.

  • Does your fish oil contain contaminants like PCB or dioxins or mercury?

We have very effective refining processes for removal of unwanted compounds that are found in fish. Our fish oils are highly refined and the levels of environmental toxins are below national and international regulatory levels set by the authorities in different countries. We have a QA/QC surveillance program ensuring that our oils always meet the specifications.

  • Does it matter whether I get my omega-3 from functional food or supplements?

A new study published in the  "British Journal of Nutrition" show that it doesn't matter whether you eat food which is enriched with omega-3, or you take fish oil capsules. Denomega Pure Health has been an active partner in this study.
