The WHO-report from 2003 concludes that it is convincing documentation that an intake of 200-500 mg EPA and DHA per. day reduces the risk of coronary heart desease.
An article by Wang et al from 2006 concludes that increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fishoil supplement, reduces heart infarct and probably the risk for stroke. Intake of linolenic acid (ALA, vegetable omega-3) don not seem to have the same effect. Mozaffarian and Rimm concludes in an review article that there is strong documentation for an inverse connection between intake of fish oil and coronary heart disease
The recommended daily dosage of EPA and DHA varies from country to country, however, not all countries have set an RDI even though there are several thousand studies describing beneficial health effects of EPA and DHA. The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) recommends 500 mg EPA and DHA per day for adults to prevent heart disease.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently set labeling reference intake values of 250 mg/day EPA + DHA.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows up to 2 g Omega-3 from supplements/3 g from food per day.
